Changin' and Rearrangin'

Have I mentioned that I've been nesting like crazy? My poor husband was put to work after work on Monday night rearranging furniture for me. Here's a "before" shot of our living room taken during the holidays (the wing chair is ordinarily in the opposite corner but its usual spot was taken by the Christmas tree.)

Here's the view of the other side of the room:

the only other photo I could find of this side of the room is outdated (aw, remember the pink fireplace?!) but you get the idea.

Our living room is narrow and long, almost too long to treat as one space. That is why I separated it into two areas- a living room and a reading nook. The problem was, no one ever used the "reading nook" side of the room, and the wasted space was driving me nuts. Also, the fireplace, which I now enjoy looking at, was sort of blocked by the arrangement.

So, here is the new arrangement:

Please excuse the cords and mess in the background!

I'm not sure about the booksellers table. Maybe a simpler console/sofa table there? Or nix it all together?

The only other thing that bugs me about this arrangement is that having the slipcovered sofa in front of the window blocks the window a bit. I'd also like to add some kind of low profile coffee table or bench/ottoman in front of the slipcovered sofa.

What do you think? Do you like it this way or do you prefer the old arrangement?

BTW- here's what I'm thinking for the big blank space on the wall above the sofa:

I've been dreaming of this photo ever since Jenny posted it on LGN a couple of months ago. I think it was originally in Lonny, but I'm not sure. I happen to have a Louis Phillipe bedroom set that I've been wanting to break up, so I think I'll take Jenny's advice and gold leaf the mirror to hang above the sofa with some wall sconces and other pretties on the sides.

BTW- I finished the kitchen chairs and will hopefully have some photos to share soon!

Love,

  3. I like change! I have only recently found your blog, so I wasn't tired of the old arrangement yet. :-)

IMO, the library table doesn't work with the open backs of the cute little bamboo chairs.
Too much open space. If you have something more
solid--a chest, a console, something else maybe from another room?--to swap with the library table (which I love, and wish I had one) it would work just a kittke better.
Again, just my opinion. Blogless Peggy

  4. Hi Peggy- thanks for your politely-phrased, constructive feedback- I really appreciate it and I quite agree. I love the backs of the chairs and I think I'd rather just see through the chair backs so I think I'll put the library table where the demilune table is now and move the demilune to another blank wall by the kitchen.

  5. Hi Pam!

Glad you've found a way to make your room to work as one big room.

I really think, though, that the bookseller's table isn't playing nicely with those beautiful chairs. I think it's great behind a sofa, but those chairs would be better on their own, I think. Their backs are lovely!

Have you tried the slipcovered sofa where the chairs are now? Might not work at all, but it would be interesting to know if you've tried it. I can easily imagine those two chairs in front of the window.

You have great style. . . I know you'll pull it all together beautifully!

  6. I have always been jealous of those chairs!! Don't hide 'em!

What about putting a console table behind the sofa against the wall? Does that make any sense? We did that once, because it was the best arrangement for the odd room, and it was the only place to get lamps in.

I LOVE your nursery!! I'm newly pregnant with my fifth (that still sounds crazy!!) and want those drapes. First we have to figure out where the nursery will be first!

  7. Have you experimented with facing a couch toward the fireplace with the wing chair in the spot you originally had it, and making the space by the windows and built-ins your reading area?
I love all of your pieces, you have great taste!
