I'm linking to Amanda's Show me the Progress Party

Way back in September I posted about this:

My big, pink, 3-sided fireplace.

I got lots of great suggestions and I think I have a plan in place.
Here's the plan:
  1. my dad is going to build me a mantel running all the way to the wall
  2. I'll paint the brass trim
  3. and paint the tile
  4. If I can get over my fear of saws, I'm hoping to also add a board and batten treatment to the wall below the mantle, covering the niche.
I'm thinking that will just about solve my dilemma. Once the mantle is in place, I'll treat the space above as one large mantle, centering the artwork over the center of the mantle, not the fireplace. The first step will be for me to paint the trim and tile. I'm a little nervous about painting the tile, but I figure pretty much anything is better than what I've got! I purchased two cans of this to get the job done:

What do you think of the color? Do you think the texture will be okay? I recall seeing someone else recently who used this or something similar to paint a fireplace surround, but now I can't remember who it was. Does anyone remember what I'm talking about?

BTW- in case anyone was wondering about my "Daddy Chair" dilemma, I must have missed the boat on the leather recliner because I never heard back from the seller. I'm stalking CL regularly for another!

Don't forget to stop by Amanda's to see more progress!

Love,

  1. I remember when you first posted this dilemma. It sounds like you have a great plan for updating this space. I think the color that you chose for the tile looks like a winner. Good luck with this and I can't wait to see the end result.

  3. I am loving your plan to update the fireplace. We have a similar color tile around our fireplace and - while I love traditional brick ones - I think the tile looks nice as well.

Can't wait to see the completed photos!

  4. I was looking at your plan, and thinking it was all good, when I saw the little link on bottom for you slipcover tutorial...so I popped on over there. OMGoodness! You got skills girl! I was b-lown away. You make it look pretty straightforward, like maybe I could actually do that.

If you can use a sewing machine like that, I am certain you can use a saw, and the board and batten is perfect to cover up that niche. It's gonna look so much better- you'll do great!

  8. There you go. . . you're on the right track, for sure! I think this is going to look great. Be sure to show us how it looks when it's all done, won't you?

(And as for the paint, I should think it would work just fine. If you're not thrilled with it, you could always paint over it!)

  10. Holy cow, I missed the pink fireplace the first time! Love that it's 3-sided though. Your plan sounds good; the mantel and board and batten will look good.

I also totally think you can paint the tile, but (I hate to say it because I don't want to discourage you) I'm a little nervous about the stone-textured paint. Just because I've seen it before in places like the bathroom at Michael's craft store where they tried to fancy it up, and it just looked like people had picked at the texture and it came off and looked like a mess. Now, obviously, that's a high-traffic area and people with no manners, but it just makes me wonder how well it would hold up.

  12. I think you have a great plan, Pam!! I will be so excited to see how the board and batten goes, and I know you'll accessorize the mantel perfectly. :) Good thinkin'!

Thanks for linking up today, friend. :)

  13. Hi Pam, I'm visiting from Amanda's party. That is a lot of pink you have to work with but I really like the color you chose to go over it. I'm anxious to see how it turns out! Take care.

  16. this looks like a big project, but I'm sure all the work will be worth it for a change from that pink tile! I have never painted tile but I'm sure it can be done, I know a lot of people paint brick fireplaces.

  17. I love your plan and the color of the "stone." You may have seen my fireplace in a previous dilemmas party. I used stone spray (Krylon brand) in a speckled gray color. You can see my post about it here: http://treasuredinmyheart.blogspot.com/2009/11/fireplace-makeover-part-3.html.

I think your fireplace will be very beautiful when you are done with it!

  19. I feel your pain with the pink:-) Our "new" home came with a pink tub and toilet in the master... it was almost a deal breaker for my husband!

I can't wait to see your "after", and just to encourage you, I recently painted the entire tile backsplash of my kitchen and it is my favorite project ever! It was inexpensive, fast, and super easy. If I can find pictures I will post a before and after... it was definitely one of those "big bang for the buck" projects.
I didn't spray paint, though, I rolled on a neutral base coat, and then used cheesecloth to swipe on a darker neutral so it looks like travertine. I was extremely nervous to try it out, but I couldn't be more thrilled. Can't wait to see your end result!
